Look around town and you will see butterfly wings popping up in local parks and attractions. Eight local artists have painted large-scale butterfly wings that form Zionsville’s Butterfly Trail. The wings serve as a fun backdrop for pictures and selfies and showcase the Town of Zionsville’s commitment to conservation and sustainability.
After hosting a call-out for local artists to submit their entries for the Butterfly Trail, the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department selected eight artists. The artists, ages 15 to 54 years old, submitted a range of designs – a Vincent VanGogh “Starry Night” inspired creation, a painting that represents the metamorphosis plants undergo as they transition from spring to summer and more.
The butterfly wings are inspired by the Town of Zionsville’s commitment to The National Wildlife Federation Mayors’ Monarch Pledge and a celebration of the Town’s conservation and environmental education efforts. Zionsville has preserved over 500 acres of parks, most left in their natural habitats. Mayor Styron has also committed to saving the monarch butterfly and other native pollinators by signing the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge.
“As part of the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, we made a commitment to creating a community art project that enhances and promotes monarch and pollinator conservation,” said Mayor Emily Styron. “I am grateful to our Parks Department for creating the Butterfly Trail and reaffirming our commitment to restoring habitats for the monarch butterfly. I am also excited to walk around town and see people of all ages taking selfies by the butterfly wings.”
The Butterfly Trail will continue through July 31, 2022. Following the Butterfly Trail, Arts in the Park will kick off on August 6 at Mulberry Fields Park. Through a variety of events including a community drum circle, yoga, a community canvas painting and more, this nearly month-long event will showcase different artistic expressions and talents in Zionsville.
