[ARCHIVED] Statement from Mayor Emily Styron following the Indianapolis FedEx facility mass shooting

Zionsville

As our community mourns the eight victims who died in the shooting at FedEx last week, we have learned that one of our own Zionsville residents, John “Steve” Weisert, is among those who lost their lives. A GoFundMe for John states, “John was a kind man with a great sense of humor who loved his children and his wife. He took pride in providing for his family even after maybe it was time for him to retire. His loss is going to mean a serious change to financial stability and strength in the home.”

I offer my heartfelt condolences to John’s wife and family and to all the victims during this unimaginably difficult time. There are now eight fewer seats at dinner tables across our state.

Our local community will be forever rocked by this senseless gun violence and the ones before it. This is another painful reminder of the epidemic of gun violence our nation faces. We cannot accept this as our American normal – we must work to change the systems.

Bless John “Steve” Weisert, the seven others we lost and their families.
