The Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded a $4,567.29 community recycling grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). The grant will be used to install recycling receptacles and temporary recycling/compost bins and for the creation of compost collection sites.

The grant will assist the Parks and Recreation Department in accomplishing several sustainability initiatives in 2021. To promote recycling in our parks, the department will install permanent recycling receptacles at four of our most visited parks. The department will also purchase portable recycling units to be utilized in programming, park events and community gatherings like the Zionsville Famers Market.

Detailed signage will be added on each recycling receptacle to specify what is acceptable. The Parks and Recreation Department will continue to provide town-wide informative recycling and compost webinars that will assist in awareness.

“The Town of Zionsville is a progressive, environmentally conscious community that prioritizes both the health and wellness of its residents and the earth,” said Parks Superintendent Jarod Logsdon. “Implementing this recycling program within our park system will further promote the character and vision of our community."

The department also will build two 11-foot x 5-foot split rail fence collection sites for gardeners to place compostable waste from our community gardens. The Parks Department will maintain a central compost site for the collected materials.

“Our Parks Department has a long history of conservation and sustainability initiatives,” said Mayor Emily Styron. “Recently we adopted Zionsville’s first Climate Action Plan. We’re also providing educational opportunities and resources for our residents and businesses. All of these efforts will help the community recycle more effectively and reduce waste, ensuring a more sustainable community that will keep Zionsville a beautiful place to live.”
