[ARCHIVED] Zionsville Police Department announces promotions

Today Mayor Emily Styron and Chief Michael Spears promoted four police officers: Lieutenant Brad Kiefer, Sergeant Thomas Lucas, Sergeant Tessa Potts and Sergeant Josh Samuelson. These are the first merit-based promotions since 2017. The promotions are effective immediately.

“The accomplishments of these officers are commendable. I appreciate the willingness of the officers to assume additional duties and responsibilities and serve our town,” said Mayor Emily Styron. 

“I am proud of these officers and their commitment to our police department and the citizens of Zionsville. I have confidence they will contribute to the success of our town in their new assignments,” said Chief Spears.

Lieutenant Brad Kiefer was appointed to the Zionsville Police Department on April 8, 2008 and promoted to sergeant in 2017. As part of his new assignment, Lieutenant Kiefer will serve as night shift “B” lieutenant. He also serves as honor guard commander, a defensive tactics/use of force instructor and crime scene investigator. He is currently attending the IMPD Leadership Academy. Previously, Lieutenant Kiefer served as Boone County Crisis Negotiation Team Commander. 

Sergeant Thomas Lucas was appointed to the Zionsville Police Department on October 16, 2017. As part of his new assignment, Sergeant Lucas will serve as night shift “A” sergeant. Currently, Sergeant Lucas is a member of the Boone County Crisis Negotiation Team and serves as a crime scene investigator and a field training officer.

Sergeant Tessa Potts was appointed to the Zionsville Police Department on December 11, 2006 and promoted to corporal in 2019. As part of her new assignment, Sergeant Potts will serve as night shift “B” sergeant. Currently, Sergeant Potts serves as a crime scene investigator and a field training officer. She formerly served as a school resource officer and as a liaison to Sylvia’s Place Child Advocacy Center.  

Sergeant Josh Samuelson was appointed to the Zionsville Police Department on February 1, 2010 and promoted to detective in 2012. As part of his new assignment, Sergeant Samuelson will serve as accreditation manager/investigations unit sergeant. He also serves as an honor guard member and crime scene investigator. He previously served as a Boone-Hamilton County drug task force member and was awarded ZPD officer of the year in 2011 and 2019.
