Zionsville Police Department recently installed 10 new Flock Safety license plate reader cameras throughout Zionsville. This system securely captures images by using Vehicle Fingerprint technology to identify the license plate and vehicle make, type and color.
This data is stored for 30 days, after which all data is wiped from the cloud completely. The data is accessible by law enforcement only (not Flock Safety employees) and there are strict guidelines on how and why officers can access the data.
The images captured are downloaded and stored into a securely encrypted cloud server. Flock Safety will also alert police through a “Hot List” if a stolen vehicle, missing persons vehicle or any vehicle that was used in a crime is detected on the camera.
Cameras are also available to local neighborhoods and businesses to capture images of incoming vehicles. In these instances, the homeowner’s association (HOA) and business own 100% of the data. Flock Safety does not share or sell data and the HOA or business determines who has access to that footage, including the police.
Additional information for HOAs and business:
- The cameras are 100% wire-free. They run on solar and battery power so no power source is necessary. This means neighborhoods can put the cameras nearly anywhere without the burden of costly infrastructure or the destruction of landscaping.
- The HOA will own the footage and, if it chooses, share footage with ZPD. ZPD has strict guidelines about how and why they search and use the data.
- This camera can be placed at the entrance to a neighborhood facing inward to document vehicles entering the neighborhood.
- All costs for the camera(s) falls upon the HOA or business.
“The license plate readers provide our officers with a valuable tool to both deter and more thoroughly investigate criminal activity in Zionsville,” said Chief Spears. “By alerting officers of stolen vehicles and wanted persons we may be able to prevent a stop crime before it occurs.”
