[ARCHIVED] Message from Mayor Emily Styron

Styron

Emotions are contagious. Scientific research has explored this theory for decades. But if you are human and living in America right now, this doesn’t take an advanced degree to see it taking place in communities across the country. Let’s try to give each other some grace over the weeks ahead as the 2020 election comes to a conclusion.  As COVID-19 cases rise and tension related to social justice and public safety issues persist, can we work toward embracing the values we hold in common? It feels as if 2020 has worked hard to convince us that we are on opposing teams. But hopefully, here in Zionsville, we can strive to find common ground and show our children what it looks like to both “win” and “lose” with grace.

An advantage of working in local government is the ability to focus our days on the aspects of public service that are rarely controversial. And so, in honor of the mundane, here is a snapshot of your Town at work. Fall leaf collection is underway and while many homeowners take advantage of this opportunity, it doesn’t attract much social media attention. Yet, like everything else in 2020, as of week one, we noticed a marked increase in volume. During a typical year, we collect 10 – 15 loads of leaves in the first week of this service. This year we were at over 50 loads in the first week.  Be sure to wave hello to our wonderful Department of Public Works crews as they travel through your neighborhood providing a terrific service that our community clearly values!

Looking ahead to November, please join me in thanking our Town employees who show up every day to keep our community safe, productive and running smoothly. This has been a tremendously challenging year for our businesses and employers. I appreciate you all for the extraordinary measures you’ve undertaken to keep our community and each other healthy.
