[ARCHIVED] Town of Zionsville and Zionsville Cultural District announce 2020 Sidewalk Poetry Contest winners

Zionsville Cultural District (ZCD), in partnership with the Town of Zionsville, announces the winners of the annual Sidewalk Poetry Contest.

This year’s contest focused on youth 17 and under. The first-place student poet is Charlotte Bricker. Bricker recently completed fourth grade at Union Elementary School and is ten years old. The second-place student poet is Talia Diffendal. Diffendal recently completed fifth grade at Z-West Middle School and is also ten years old.

Bricker and Diffendal’s poems can be viewed on the ZCD website.

Despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented, the poetry contest finished strong. According to ZCD Sidewalk Poetry Contest committee members Donna Monday and Adela Creasy, this year’s contest drew 33 youth entries. “We were hoping this contest would serve as a creative outlet for our youth during this unprecedented time,” said Creasy.

“We are thankful for the Zionsville Cultural District’s partnership in turning our sidewalks into works of art,” said Mayor Emily Styron. “This annual tradition surprises and delights both residents and visitors to our town. Our young poets’ words will live on in our community for decades to come.”

The winning poems will be imprinted in conjunction with the Zionsville Street & Stormwater Department’s ongoing sidewalk repair schedule. A ceremony will be held this fall once the stamps are set.
