[ARCHIVED] Trick-or-treat hours in Zionsville

Halloween

The official trick-or-treat hours in Zionsville are 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

For those participating in Halloween festivities, Zionsville Fire Department has offered the following safety tips:

Child Safety

  • When choosing a costume, stay away from long trailing fabric.
  • If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see through it.
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costumes.
  • Encourage children to only visit homes with well-lit entrances.
  • Discourage children from approaching unfamiliar vehicles or open car trunks.
  • While driving, stay alert to darting children.
  • Inspect all treats before children eat them.
  • Chaperone your trick -or-treaters.
  • Develop a code phrase, question, or emoji that can be easily shared and understood should children be in a threatening situation.
  • Make sure children know how to call 9-1-1 if they should need.

Decoration Safety

  • Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily.  Keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like bulbs and heaters.
  • Remember to keep all exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Use battery-operated candles or glow-stick in jack-o-lanterns.  If you use a real candle, use extreme caution.
  • When lighting candles use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter.
  • Place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.
  • Make sure visitors (especially children) are watched at all times around lit candles.

General Fire Safety

  • Keep a working fire extinguisher close by.
  • Make sure all smoke alarms in the home are working.
  • Make and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
