The official trick-or-treat hours in Zionsville are 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.
For those participating in Halloween festivities, Zionsville Fire Department has offered the following safety tips:
Child Safety
- When choosing a costume, stay away from long trailing fabric.
- If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eye holes are large enough so they can see through it.
- Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costumes.
- Encourage children to only visit homes with well-lit entrances.
- Discourage children from approaching unfamiliar vehicles or open car trunks.
- While driving, stay alert to darting children.
- Inspect all treats before children eat them.
- Chaperone your trick -or-treaters.
- Develop a code phrase, question, or emoji that can be easily shared and understood should children be in a threatening situation.
- Make sure children know how to call 9-1-1 if they should need.
Decoration Safety
- Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like bulbs and heaters.
- Remember to keep all exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes.
- Use battery-operated candles or glow-stick in jack-o-lanterns. If you use a real candle, use extreme caution.
- When lighting candles use long, fireplace-style matches or a utility lighter.
- Place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.
- Make sure visitors (especially children) are watched at all times around lit candles.
General Fire Safety
- Keep a working fire extinguisher close by.
- Make sure all smoke alarms in the home are working.
- Make and practice a fire escape plan with your family.
