On Saturday, Aug. 10, the Town of Zionsville and community partners will hold Creekfest – an annual celebration of Eagle Creek through recreation, stewardship and education. This event includes a stream cleanup and festival with booths and activities.
Volunteers must register in advance online for the creek cleanup, which begins at 9 a.m. This year volunteers will focus on cleaning up the northern section of Eagle Creek from Turkeyfoot Nature Park to Holiday Road.
From 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., volunteers and the public are invited to enjoy refreshments and participate in water- and conservation-related activities at Elm Street Green, including kayak demonstrations, a creekstomp, a DNR bass casting station, arts and crafts and more.
For the second year in a row, a rubber duck race in Eagle Creek will begin at 12:30 p.m. For $1, participants can decorate their own duck and put them in the creek for a race. Prizes will be available for the top three winning ducks.
Creekfest began in 2013 with a stream cleanup and 40 volunteers. In the past, more than 7,000 pounds of trash have been collected during the stream cleanup.
“Creekfest is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of Eagle Creek in our community. It’s encouraging seeing the volunteer interest each year for our annual creek cleanup, and the festival portion allows us to provide water-related activities and education for all ages,” said Park Naturalist Mindy Murdock.
Creekfest is a partnership between the Zionsville Parks & Recreation and the Zionsville Street & Stormwater Departments, as well as the Boone County Solid Waste Management District and Zionsville resident Todd Settle. Volunteer, sponsorship and exhibitor forms, along with parking and transportation information, can be found online at www.zionsville-in.gov/creekfest.
