Wednesday, March 4 - Monthly Bird Walk

  • When: 8 – 9 a.m.
  • Where: Turkey Foot Nature Park, 4795 Turkey Foot Rd
  • Ages: Adults

Join a Naturalist on the first Wednesday morning of every month for a casual hike to spot birds in our local parks.  This is a great way to explore Zionsville’s parks while learning about the birds who call our town home.  All experience levels welcome.  We will have a few binoculars and field guides available to borrow.  Dress for the weather.  Be prepared to hike up to 1 mile.  Follow our Facebook page for updates.  Program will be cancelled in heavy rain or severe weather.

Saturday, March 7 - CAMP REGISTRATION OPENS

  • When: 9 a.m.
  • Registration after March 7 will be during normal Nature Center business hours.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
  • Detailed camp information and registration forms can be found at www.zionsville-in.gov/summercamps or picked up at the Zion Nature Center.

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration must be completed in person; mail-in registration will not be accepted.

Thursday, March 12 - Invasives and the Terrestrial Plant Rule

Invasive plant species impact Indiana in various ways, including loss of biodiversity, degradation of habitats, decreased agricultural yields and impacts on recreation and tourism. Indiana landowners and managers spend more than $8.6 million annually managing invasive species in Indiana. Beginning April 18, 2020, the Indiana Terrestrial Plant Rule will make it illegal to sell, gift, barter, exchange, distribute, transport or introduce 44 invasive pest plant species within the state. Mary Welz, Regional Specialist with SICIM, will discuss what this means for our community and the future of invasive management in Boone County.

Do you know how to identify venomous snakes?  What venomous snakes live in Indiana?  What is the difference between venomous and poisonous?  Join to learn the answers to these questions and more! 

Tuesday, March 17 - Toddler Trek

  • When: 10 – 11 a.m.
  • Where: Elm Street Green, 165 Elm Street
  • Registration is required
  • Ages: 5 years and under with an adult

Spending time outdoors has numerous benefits for a child’s physical and emotional well-being.  Each month we will meet at different Zionsville parks to play, explore, and watch the seasons change. Toddler Trek is rain or shine (with the exception of severe weather). Dress for the weather and be prepared to get moving!

Friday, March 20 - Mommy & Me: Rabbits

Give your toddler a fun and interactive introduction to nature in our Mommy & Me classes! Each month we will focus on a different topic and will feature live animal encounters, stories, crafts and nature exploration.

Saturday, March 21 - iNaturalist and Seek

  • When: 1 - 2 p.m.
  • Where:Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
  • Registration is required
  • Ages: 6 years and up with an adult
  • You will need to bring a smartphone, iPad or other internet ready device.

Let’s discover our natural world! iNaturalist is an online social network of people who help each other learn about nature. Seek is iNaturalist’s kid friendly platform that protects their privacy. You can use both to record your own observations, get help with identifications, and even collaborate with others. We will explore how to create your own account and practice using the app out in the field. 

Saturday, March 21 - Campfire and Night Hike

  • When: 6 – 7 p.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street

Spring is here! Join us for an early evening walk in the woods as we listen for frogs and search for those early spring signs. Then we will return to the Nature Center campfire to roast marshmallows over a crackling fire.

Wednesday, March 25 - Knee-High Naturalists

  • When: 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
  • Registration is required
  • Ages: 3 – 5 years (Children must be fully potty-trained)
  • Fee: $10 (Payment due by March 23)

Knee-high Naturalists is our new, monthly series for the youngest nature enthusiasts!  In this drop-off program, children will learn all about the wonders of nature with our Naturalists.  Similar to our summer camps, activities will take place both inside and outside the Zion Nature Center.  This program will provide a hands-on, nature-based educational experience for your child.

Friday, March 27 - Garden Seed Balls

Seed balls are perfect to make for spring! We’ll create several balls to take home made from recycled paper. Plant them in your garden, or give them as a gift this spring!

Saturday, March 28 - Nature of Nests

  • When: 1 – 2:30 p.m.
  • Where: Zion Nature Center, 690 Beech Street
  • Ages: 6 years and up with an adult
  • Registration is required

Spring is the perfect time to explore nests. We’ll learn how to identify some common bird nests on a short nature hike. Then we’ll end our exploration creating our own bird nests made of natural and craft materials to take home.
