Saturday, December 2 - Familiar Butterflies of Indiana

Nature Photojournalist and Author, Jay Cossey's most recent publication is Familiar Butterflies of Indiana and their Natural History--a simple but detailed guide written for the general public. Jay's nature photographs have appeared in numerous field guides and periodicals, including National Geographic's first Butterfly Calendar (all 24 images), plus Audubon, National Wildlife Federation and Kaufman field guides to name a few.
Enjoy a presentation on the Familiar Butterflies of Indiana followed by a book signing by the author.

Pre-order your copy at the Zion Nature Center until November 26, to pick up at the event. There will be limited copies available for purchase during the event. All proceeds support the Zion Nature Center.


Thursday, December 7 - Night Tree

  • Where: Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library and Zion Nature Center

Join us this holiday season in bringing the book, Night Tree by Eve Bunting, to life. After the story enjoy a nighttime walk to the Zion Nature Center to create edible tree decorations, and decorate a tree for our wilderness friends. We’ll end the evening sipping hot cocoa and singing some favorite holiday songs.

Learn about the history of papermaking and make your own holiday cards using a variety of natural and recycled materials. Registration is required as space is limited.


Saturday, December 16 - Monthly Dog Walk


  • When: 10 - 11:00 a.m.
  • Where: Starkey Nature Park, 667 Sugarbush Drive
Grab your closest canine companion and burn a few winter calories on this brisk hike through the park. Plan for some wet and muddy conditions with your pup.

Saturday, December 16 & Sunday, December 17 - Nature Ornaments

We found the perfect way to catch that holiday spirit. Visit the Zion Nature Center this weekend to make some nature-inspired ornaments. Perfect for gifts, or to decorate your tree and start a new family tradition.


Thursday, December 21 - Winter Solstice Campfire

December 21st marks the official start of winter and the longest night of the year. Celebrate with an evening stroll under the stars at Zion Nature Center. After the hike you can warm up with a crackling campfire, hot chocolate and roasting marshmallows.

Thursday, December 28 - Nature Treasure Boxes

Whether you are young or old, does exploring outdoors mean a collection of rocks, leaves, flowers, and sticks? We’re making our own nature treasure boxes so all those little collected treasures have a place to call home. Registration is required as space is limited.

Saturday, December 30 - Starkey Park Project

Observations are being collected with iNaturalist throughout 2017 to help Zionsville Parks and Recreation have a better understanding of the species and habitats that thrive within Starkey Park. Bring your smart phone or camera and join Park Naturalist Mindy Murdock as she explores the seasonal changes in the park.

Sunday, December 31 - Noon Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is a great time to celebrate all we’ve done and all we will do in the coming year. However, midnight can come too late for young ones, and let’s face it, sometimes the adults. Join the Zion Nature Center as we have a HOOTING good time celebrating the New Year a little early. Your family can raise a toast with some tasty juice, watch a balloon drop at Noon, and party with Nature Center friends during this year’s owl themed celebration!  Registration is required as space is limited.
